Late Show Highlights

Here were my favorite monologue jokes from last night’s Late Show with David Letterman:

Anybody here from Italy? Do we have an Italians in the audience? Italy’s in trouble. They’re broke. They’ve got no money. I don’t want to say anything, but have you ever been to their coliseum? Between you and me, it’s a dump.

So, anyway, Silvio Berlusconi is stepping down as Prime Minister of Italy. How about that? He’s gone. Being replaced by Billy Crystal. Billy’s also taking over Penn State football. [Loud gasps from audience] I thought you were ready.

Honest to God, if we have to sit through any more of these Republican debates I’m ready for a dictatorship. I can’t take another damn debate. Last week they debated about the economy. This week it’s foreign policy. Next week: move trivia.

Newt Gingrich is doing very well. He and Mitt Romney are apparently tied. That’s a tough decision right there. It’s funny cause Romney is the Mormon, and Gingrich is the one with three wives.

The desk segments included the Top Ten Ways The World Would Be Different If Everyone were Named Newt, and a return of a former Late Show staffer. They were both reasonably funny:

Jason Segel was the first couch guest. He’s on the show How I Met Your Mother and in the upcoming Muppet movie. The interview was fine, not great but also not bad. I like Jason a lot. He’s a talented guy who I have enjoyed watching in various roles over the years. He does a good job of playing a kid trapped in a man’s body. Based on his Late Night interview it looks like those characters aren’t too far from his real persona. He’d be perfect if they ever remake Big. Here’s a clip:

Chef Jamie Oliver was the cooking guest. Cooking segments are always good no matter what late-night show its on, but this is one area where Letterman really stands out. His interaction with guest chefs is so funny and ridiculous, it’s truly amazing any cooking ever gets done. Overall the segment was really entertaining. I wish there was a clip. It’s worth watching.

The Kooks was the musical guest. They were great:

Pretty good show. I give it:
