Late Late Show Highlights
It’s the first night of “Metallica Week” on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. Craig is actually doing stand-up through the Midwest at the moment, so these shows were pre-recorded.
The cold open was ok, but not entertaining enough to worry about.
Here were my favorite monologue jokes:
It’s a great day for us here on the show because Metallica is here. CBS was worried that Metallica might trash the stage, and I’m like, “Look at this dump. If they trash the stage it’ll cause thousands of dollars of improvements.”
There’ll be a lot of headbangers watching the show tonight. Fans of heavy metal are called “headbangers,” like fans of Justin Bieber are called “idiots.” That’s right Beliebers; I look forward to your outraged tweets.
People say that Metallica are one of the greatest heavy metal bands of all time. This may be true, but I think they’re just one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time. You’ve got bass, guitar and drums; that’s rock and roll, it’s not some Eurotrash DJ pushing a button on the dubstep machine. Oh, now great, I alienated the 18-34 year olds. I’ll have to think of something to win them back: “Hey, Taylor Swift is here.”
The comedy segment bit was “Tweetmail”. I enjoyed the last two minutes of it enough to recommend watching:
James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich were the only couch guests. They are the lead singer and drummer, respectively, in Metallica. The interview was fine. James was relaxed, looked like he was having fun and laughed a lot. Lars gave me the impression that he might decide to relax one day in the future, smiled sometimes and did most of the talking, which included sharing some interesting tidbits. I think I would have enjoyed the interview more, though, if all four members of the band had been there and had had a chance to speak. Regardless, it was pretty cool that they were on Craig’s show. The interview is pretty long, so I only recommend it if you’re a serious Craig or Metallica fan.
Metallica was the musical guest. They rocked it as hard as they could:
There was no closing segment.
Decent show. I give it:
– Woody
Ha! If Lars is on the couch, no one else gets a chance to speak. That’s what he does. Kirk doesn’t talk (or even appear) unless he’s asked. Trujillo is a bass player – and the interview tells you what Metallica think of bass players.
Anyone else noticing that in the musical segment Lars is getting a lot more camera time than any other drummer on that stage? Wonder if that’s in their contract.
