Late Show Highlights
Anyone see the Late Show with David Letterman last night? There were a few good monologue jokes:
Price of a first-class stamp has gone up. Are you aware of this? What is it, forty-four cents or something to mail a letter? It’s crazy. But, on the other hand, I’m hoping this will cut down on my hate mail.
You know what’s a big show? That Celebrity Apprentice. Have you ever seen it? Last night they had the season finale. Three hours, and it was live, and the winner is Joan Rivers. It’s a big deal. The winner of the show wins $250,000 for their favorite charity. And in this case it’s Face Lifts on Wheels.
They’re only going to allow 250 people inside the Statue of Liberty a day. It’s the same rules with Madonna.
Letterman did something I’ve never seen him do before. He skipped the desk segments and went straight to his first guest, Tom Hanks. After watching the interview the change made sense. Hanks started with, I’m not kidding, a nine minute story on how his dogs got skunked a few weeks ago. He followed it up with, no joke, another nine minute story about attending the Obama inauguration. He ended with, for reals, a nine minute story on his new movie.
I’m an old-school fan of Hanks. That means I enjoyed his movies in the 80s and 90s, but haven’t seen him in anything in probably 10 years. I thought the interview was good, as Hanks was full of energy and good humor. My favorite bit was his explanation that firemen in Italy are called “vigilantes of fire”. “How cool is that,” he asked Dave as the crowd laughed and clapped.
The Killers were the musical guest. I like The Killers. I think Brandon Flowers has a great voice.
Overall I give the show a B.
